If you are considering breast augmentation, one of the most important decisions you will make involves the size and shape of the breast implants themselves. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Semira Bayati, MD, offers a variety of breast implant shapes and sizes, and you will be able to see and feel them during your initial breast augmentation consultation to experience the differences. The ultimate goal is to make sure your selection can meet your needs while yielding natural-looking results that compliment your silhouette.
Silicone and saline breast implants are the two major types of implants, and both are available in a range of sizes. At your consultation, Dr. Bayati will talk with you about your goals and help you determine the best option in terms of size. You can even “try on” several sizes using a special bra to get some general ideas about how they will enhance your profile. Remember: bigger doesn’t always mean better. Factors to consider include the rate of projection, the effect on your overall proportions, whether implants that are too large may negatively impact an active lifestyle (participation in certain sporting activities, yoga, or others), and whether you are hoping for dramatic results or a more subtle outcome.
There are a number of options when it comes to breast implant shape; however, two of the most common are “round” and “teardrop”-shaped (also known as “shaped”) implants. Round breast implants may be more ideal for women who would like a more prominent projection, as well as more enhanced volume in the upper areas of the breasts. These implants are also known to hold their shape and not produce noticeable effects in the event that they move inside the breasts. On the other hand, a teardrop-shaped implant is created with a “downward slope,” similar to that of a natural breast. This option can sometimes be advantageous for patients who are very thin and those looking to significantly increase breast size; however, if a teardrop-shaped implant moves inside the breast, there is a risk that it will create a misshapen appearance and will need to be corrected. Both of these implant shapes have advantages and disadvantages, depending on your unique needs and goals; but, they can also provide very natural-looking results for the right patient.
Dr. Bayati will thoroughly explain all aspects of breast augmentation and go over your breast implant options with you in detail during your initial consultation. You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have, and Dr. Bayati will work with you to narrow down your choices and determine the best option for your needs.
