What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure to rebuild the shape, contour, and appearance of one or both breasts following mastectomy or lumpectomy. There are several approaches to breast reconstruction, and the best option depends on a patient’s anatomy, cancer treatment plan, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Implant-based reconstruction uses saline or silicone implants to recreate breast volume and shape, often in a staged process. Alternatively, autologous (or “flap”) reconstruction uses the patient’s own tissue to create a more natural look and feel. Some patients may also benefit from a hybrid approach that combines implants with tissue support.
Reconstruction can be performed at the same time as mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or months to years later (delayed reconstruction), depending on factors such as radiation therapy, healing, and personal readiness.
