Breast Reduction

Most patients feel a relief from the weight of the large breasts almost immediately. However, there will be some discomfort in the days following breast reduction surgery due to swelling and soreness around the incisions; however, this can often be well-managed with medication. Plenty of rest and close adherence to post-operative instructions can also help ensure the healing process is as smooth as possible.

There are several appointments required for this procedure, beginning with your initial consultation, during which Dr. Bayati evaluates your anatomy and develops a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs. You will then attend a pre-operative visit to review instructions, finalize surgical details, and prepare for the procedure. After surgery, multiple follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your healing, assess your results, and address any concerns.

You will notice an immediate reduction in breast size and weight following surgery, which many patients describe as an instant sense of relief. Keep in mind, however, that swelling and bruising may temporarily affect the final appearance.

Over the first few weeks, the breasts will begin to settle, and the results will become more refined. Most patients see significant improvement within one to two months, with final results becoming more apparent around three to six months.

Travel after breast reduction surgery should be planned carefully, particularly during the early stages of recovery. Short-distance travel may be possible within one week, depending on your comfort level, though longer trips should be postponed for 1-2 weeks. If travel is necessary, patients are encouraged to move periodically and stay hydrated, and Dr. Bayati will provide personalized guidance based on recovery progress.

Breast reduction surgery is generally safe when performed by a qualified, Board-certified plastic surgeon; however, as with any procedure, there are potential risks. These may include infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry, changes in nipple sensation, and delayed wound healing. In rare cases, complications related to anesthesia may occur. During your consultation, all potential risks will be discussed in detail so you can make a fully informed decision for your care.

There will be noticeable scars following a breast reduction procedure; however, Dr. Bayati takes great care with her incision techniques to make residual scarring as minimal as possible. Over time, the scars should fade to some degree. With proper scar management, products, and occasional laser treatments, they are typically very well hidden and acceptable.

Medical insurance policies may cover some costs associated with breast reduction surgery, provided the procedure is considered medically necessary. As noted in the section above, reductions that are smaller in nature and primarily performed to create a “lifting” effect are typically not covered.

Swelling is a common side effect of breast reduction surgery and can be expected to peak within the first week, followed by a gradual dissipation. During that time, swelling can often be controlled and potentially reduced more quickly by wearing any prescribed surgical garments as recommended, eating a healthy diet rich in protein and antioxidants (leafy greens, fish, and fruits are typically good options), and minimizing salt intake.

Loose-fitting bras without underwire can typically be worn approximately 3 weeks after breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Bayati may advise you to wait an even longer period to ensure that healing is not compromised.

Dr. Bayati can perform advanced male breast reduction surgery for men who are experiencing gynecomastia. Liposuction or tissue excision has proven highly successful for many patients with this common concern. With male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Bayati can eliminate excess skin, glandular tissue, and/or fat in the breasts to create a flatter-looking chest.
