Dr. Semira Bayati is supporting a national breast implants registry that will compile reports of a very rare condition that can affect patients who have had breast augmentation. As of January of this year, the condition, called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), has only been seen in 34 patients out of the 5 to 10 million women all over the world who have breast implants. A recent patient of Dr. Bayati’s was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 29. She first discovered a lump in one of her breasts when she conducted a self-examination at home due to some soreness in the area. Following a mammogram and an ultrasound, her doctor ordered a biopsy, which tested positive for breast cancer. A little over two weeks later, she underwent a double nipple sparing mastectomy and breast reconstruction.
